PerConŽ - application

PerConŽ when applied to a concrete surface, will act as a permanent surface hardener, binding dust inside the pores and capillaries, stopping water-migration through the capillary poresystem, yet without hampering normal vapour transmission.

PerConŽ's pressure-less penetrating power and the simplicity of its application techniques makes it most suitable for the treatment of Concrete in any location, on any level and in any position. Walls, floors or ceilings, insides or outsides of buildings and constructions, it is only a matter of getting close enough to reach the surface and spray the product with manually operated low pressure spraying tools.

Treatment of façades of buildings, constructions in road networks as viaducts, fly overs, tunnels and bridges, may require extra equipment like (rolling) scaffolding, ladders, even sometimes small boats; but then you are on to worthwhile jobs that will cover easily all those extra costs, since the basics are always the same: Simple, low cost equipment and products, but highly effective, and a thousand or more m2's done in a day's work.

PerConŽ is very suitable for treatment of concrete surfaces below grade. Basements (a stop to water migration from outside soil, by applying PerConŽ to inside walls and floors), foundations (prior to or after being embedded into the soil), concrete sewage pipes (retard disintegration of cement paste caused by acids), inside surfaces of tunnels (prevent bad contamination from fungus and efflorescence) and concrete constructions in general (prevent loss of aesthetical and constructional value in chemically aggressive environments, a category to which every modern City belongs because of a high content of CO2 in the air).

PerConŽ can be applied to the surface of any (portland) cement bonded material like re-enforced concrete, cement plaster, concrete bricks, concrete tiles, but also gypsum and porous natural stone with a higher alkalinity, like marble.

However, in case of a polished, shiny surface (marble, polished concrete), application should be done onto the non-shining side, because PerConŽ has an etching power that is needed to break open capillaries when blocked by amorphous membranes, to secure a continuous penetration of the capillary poresystem. Hence, when the purpose is to make a marble or (diamond grain) polished concrete surface less permeable and thus less vulnerable to penetration of contaminating liquids, best is to apply PerConŽ before polishing the surface. When an already polished concrete or marble has to be made less permeable to protect it from contamination, best is to open up the surface by grinding it mildly, then apply PerConŽ as prescribed and next re-polish the surface with a diamond grain technique, preferrably a day later (to allow the product to penetrate and react completely). This could be relatively costly but may safe considerable maintenance costs in the longer term. In case of accidental contamination covered by Insurance, cleaning or repair should best be followed with application of PerConŽ and next a finish with diamond grain polishing, which will safe the Insurance Co. involved a lot of costs when compared to conventional repair methods or replacement.

Basements can be treated from the inside. PerConŽ will even penetrate against a hydrostatic head and will form a barrier to water migration inside the concrete, leaving the inside surface dry and clean.

PerConŽ has been tested for salt initiated freeze and thaw damage in concrete structures and the results have shown largely improved resistance. PerConŽ keeps water out of the surface while the gel-like compound formed inside the pores has an expansion ratio similar to concrete itself, in spite of the basic component being mainly water.

One application of PerConŽ to build the water barrier inside the surface, followed by one application of TopConŽ to make the surface Hydrofobe (water repellent), will take care of that. If the surface is going to be finished with a paint, PerConŽ should be applied once and next the (water base) paint can be mixed with TopConŽ at a ratio of 1:5. If the Concrete has to be protected from hydrostatic pressure (basements, in floors, in air conditioned rooms etc.) at least 2(two) applications of PerConŽ are required even when painted afterwards.

Application methods in GENERAL

Standard application is 2(two) sprays of PerConŽ with each spray making the surface wet, but NOT soaking wet, no dripping or running down of liquid nor formation of puddles. The second spray can be done any time after the first layer has gone dry to the touch, but preferably immediately after.

In case of any problems expected in this sense, we recommend any of the following solutions:

Application of a layer of plain water onto a dry surface before the actual PerConŽ treatment is done. (Always wait till the surface is dry to the touch again) or an extra spray between 2 layers of PerConŽ or immediately after, can often solve that problem. However, the best will always be to chose a better moment, like not by midday hot sun, NEVER when it rains or on a wet surface, but maybe in the early morning when the surfaces have cooled down suffiently and the sun is still a few hours off. The lowest temperature should not be less than 10'C both of the surface and the product itself.

The percentage of water that is part of PerConŽ as a ready to use product, is calculated on the basis of the average porosity of Concrete 35 - 65 (EU standard) so as to be in balance with the minimum penetration depth required and the ratio needed to fill the capillary pore system throughout that layer. The fact is that the water in PerConŽ is needed to act as the carrier to allow the active ingredients to penetrate, then next that water must serve as the ONLY medium in which the chemical reactions can take place, and when that happens the water is needed as the largest component in terms of volume in the formation of the gel that will saturate the capillaries and pores to the maximum… It should be clear that as little as possible of the water should evaporate.

On the other hand, no water should be added to the product as it is, because the ratio of water and all active
ingredients in this product is not a mixture at random but is a composition of inter-reactive compounds
that should remain in balance. Additional water added to the surface to be treated or less water when
it evaporates, effects only the amount of gel formed initially, but not the actual reaction that
triggers the formation itself. In a later stage, after sufficient water will have evaporated,
the reaction will come to normal terms still. However, when water is added to the
product directly or allowed to evaporate from it
before penetration into a
Concrete, that balance will be disturbed definitely.

To increase the certainty of the result we have added a so called 'Surface Tension Reducer' (STR) to PerConŽ which causes the opposite effect of a Hydrofobic condition, making the water molecules relax and reject each other rather than attracting each other. TopConŽ makes sure that this hydrophobic reaction occurs and clusters of water molecules become too big to be able to penetrate stony or woody surfaces. But the STR in PerConŽ will make sure that water molecules can move and penetrate single filed, allowing the liquid to penetrate much easier. This penetration power does not aim at more depth, as many conventional products often claim, because for the actual advantages of a treatment that is NOT essential. Depth of penetration can only be increased when first of all enough liquid is present. The penetration power of PerConŽ aims at getting to the core of cement grains after they have stopped hydrating as normal water can not reach the remaining cores anymore because of the density of crystals and layers of cement paste that gradually built up around them. The STR in PerConŽ makes it possible for the liquid to reach those cores and take the hydration yet a little further. That does not do much to the slab or construction that concrete is part of, because it concerns a mere 2-3 mm of the surface only, but it surely adds to the strength of that surface and consequently the durability of it. A tougher, dustfree, liquid tight surface.

In some cases we may have to add one or two sprays of plain water, before or after the first spray with PerConŽ, like when the surface prior to the first spray is extremely dry, with not much of water to be expected inside the first 10-15 mm of the concrete's surface or when application under less favourable conditions can not be avoided, like too much wind and/or too high temperatures of the surface or of the environment around it. Try to avoid spraying PerConŽ directly onto a warm / hot surface, e.g. directly in a hot sun. Insufficient water will leave an inert, crystallised compound without any attachment or bonding within the concrete. Too much water, however, will not harm the eventual reaction, it will merely slow it down, until evaporation has taken care of that and the balance between water and the active ingredients of PerConŽ become normal again.

Inform us about the composition of the Concrete, its age, an indication of its moisture content, details regarding the surrounding environment and what it is you would like to see as a result of a PerConŽ application. Then we will advise you, non-committally for you of course, the best method to use.

There is NO maintenance required. PerConŽ is NOT a coating. It stops the water problem from inside the concrete, leaving the concrete's appearance unchanged. The maintaining of a high alkaline condition at the surface of a concrete will, in addition to all benefits of a PerConŽ treatment, prevent growth of fungi, algae, moulds and moss. In case of bio-contamination on ANY surface of ANY material, including Concrete, Bricks, Stone, Glass, Plastics, Metals, Wood, check our water based, totally environmentally acceptable FungiMoveŽ. This product will remove Algae, Mould, Fungus and Moss from any surface, without any harm done to that surface, by simple low pressure spraying. Once FungiMoveŽ has done its job, the surface can be washed with plain water to remove the remaining debris and, depending on climatical and environmental conditions, fungus will not grow anymore from 6 months upto 1 year.

Specific Application details

No special equipment is needed. Simple low pressure spraying devices as displayed in several of the pictures on our website or within application briefings as this one, are sufficient to cover thousands of m2 in a normal working day. Even for very large areas the best method is to use this spraying tool because of its nature of being independent from any power supply other than the applicators pysical handling. It does not need more than the average physical stamina without too much training of the man operating the equipment. For really large areas the employment of more applicators operating each a tool as said, will be the simplest solution. Coverage per spray is an average 8 m2 per litre; when applying more then this in one and the same spray would cause liquid to run down from walls or form poodles on pavement and floors. Hence, the best method for application of PerConŽ would be 2 sprays over the same surface of each approx. 8 m2 per liter, whichs comes down to an average 4 m2 per liter.

A surface should be clean. No grease, oil or remainders of paint or coatings or any contamination that will hamper the penetration of P should be present. When smaller spots cannot be cleaned from such contamination, that will be no real problem, since product sprayed around it will penetrate from all sides and with enough liquid eventually saturate the underlying capillary poresystem. Surfaces treated previously with silicones, should not be treated with PerConŽ since such surfaces are totally choked and PerConŽ will be severely hampered at its penetration of that concrete.
Concrete needs only to be brushed to clean it from sand and loose dirt. Even without brushing PerConŽ will penetrate and work inside, however, the dirt attached to the surface will only absorb part of the liquid, increasing the need for more product than actually necessary or hamper enough of it to penetrate. Existing fungus, algae and moss could better be brushed off as much as possible, or the surface be prepared with a Ž treatment as explained above.
